Zifan Zhou

Zifan Zhou is a Research Fellow in Prof. Zheshen Zhang’s Quantum Engineering Laboratory within the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan. His research focuses on precision optical sensing, photonic technologies, and quantum networking.

Zifan received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Northwestern University in 2021. His research has included ring laser gyroscopes, optical levitation, atomic clocks, and slow-light interferometry. He has also contributed to the first direct observation of gravitational waves as a member of the LIGO Collaboration.

Through his research, Zifan is interested in translating advances in optics, photonics, and quantum engineering into practical technologies for sensing, measurement, and information systems. He is passionate about interdisciplinary collaboration and connecting fundamental research with emerging technologies and real-world applications.
