The Multiplier: Connecting to Community to Connect to Networks

As more communities devise their own broadband solutions, leveraging the upcoming funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, what makes for successful efforts that are responsive to community needs? This is the third of six case studies that seek to understand the stories of broadband community champions and the factors that contributed to their success.

Jason Kronemeyer, Director of Technology at Eastern Upper Peninsula Intermediate School District (EUPISD), has played a pivotal role as a broadband champion in Northern Michigan’s Eastern Upper Peninsula (EUP). Focused on enhancing educational outcomes, Jason’s unconventional strategies and dedication have attracted infrastructure construction and multiple internet service providers (ISPs) to the region. He believes that broadband access significantly benefits students’ learning and has actively worked to expand internet connectivity beyond his official responsibilities, leveraging relationships, data-driven storytelling, and educational initiatives.

Jason’s efforts have led to millions in infrastructure grants and the formation of the EUPConnect Collaborative, a multi-sector effort to achieve high-speed broadband for all residents. His legacy includes major infrastructure investments and reduced barriers to internet access in the EUP, although he acknowledges that there is still work to be done in bridging the digital divide.
