Merit Network Introduces New Ethernet Network Service

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Merit Network has debuted a new E-rate eligible networking service, called Ethernet Network Service (ENS). The service provides secure point-to-point telecommunications services to Merit Members with a dedicated fiber-optic connection.

“Our new ENS facility is meant to provide a commonly needed service for geographically-dispersed satellite locations for distributed organizations,” said Joseph Sawasky, president and CEO for Merit. “Many Merit Members have office or classroom building locations that require high-performance and secure network capabilities, and Merit is now prepared to deliver in select regions.”

ENS is ideal for organizations that need to connect two geographically distributed locations, such as a library system to a branch or a university to an extension center. The service provides a secure layer 2 connection with low latency and transfer rates between 10 megabits-per-second (Mbps) and 900 Mbps. ENS is a fast, flexible solution that supports today’s modern network applications, such as voice over IP (VoIP) phone service and web conferencing.

Managing an ENS connection is stress-free since each link is fully managed by Merit and is supported 24 hours a day, seven days a week by the Merit Support Center.

The affordable switched Ethernet service is currently available in portions of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, with additional locations to be added in the future. ENS is an excellent alternative to a leased telecommunications circuit.

“Merit’s network exists for the benefit of our public sector Membership community,” said David Dennis, Merit’s executive director of product management. “Ethernet Network Service is our latest network capability, and we hope that this will allow our Members to further integrate Merit into their technology strategies. We want our Membership to enjoy the premium network speed, quality and high levels of support that they require to further their goals and missions.”
