About Merit

A Commitment to Excellence

Merit continues to leverage its experience managing NSFNET, the precursor to the modern Internet, to catapult Michigan into the forefront of networking technologies. Merit has implemented a 10 Gbps backbone and is in the process of implementing it across Michigan to continue to provide a flexible, robust architecture to support the research and education needs. The 10 Gbps is completely self-funded. Merit received no legislative dollars to support the effort.

Merit believes in the strength of a robust educational community. By connecting organizations, building relationships and sharing services, educational institutions can achieve far more together than they can alone.

REACH-3MC - Merit's ARRA Project

Lighting the Way for Michigan

The REACH Michigan Middle Mile Collaborative (REACH-3MC) project built 2,287 miles of open-access, advanced fiber-optic network through rural and underserved communities in Michigan's Lower and Upper Peninsulas. The network provides backhaul to key connection points in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Led by Merit Network, Michigan's research and education network, REACH-3MC was funded by a two grants from the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), commonly referenced as the Stimulus Package.

The REACH-3MC project was completed in 2014.
