Streamlining the Internet of Things and Other Cyber-Physical Systems
Researchers from Michigan Technological University, Boston University, University of California, Berkeley, and University of California, Riverside recently published a keynote paper in IEEE Transactions in CAD on improving the framework for cyber-physical systems, also known as the Internet of Things. One area that they stressed was the improvement of cybersecurity in the design process. The researchers recommended that cybersecurity experts be involved in each stage of the design and manufacturing process since cybersecurity isn’t one-size-fits-all.

Henry Ford College is partnering to provide robotics and automation training in southeast Michigan

[/visibility] GRCC Replaces Nearly $590,000 in Textbooks Through Open Educational Partnerships
Through its new partnerships with the OpenStax program and other providers of free digital resources, Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) has replaced almost $590,000 in textbooks with free or substantially less expensive versions. Last February, GRCC joined Rice University’s OpenStax program, which provides free, high-quality peer-reviewed textbooks. During the fall semester, more than 90 GRCC class sections used the open-educational resource (OER) texts.

HFC Partners with WIN to Provide Robotics Training
Henry Ford College (HFC) is partnering with the Workforce Intelligence Network for Southeast Michigan (WIN) to provide robotics and automation training to workers in southeast Michigan. The United States Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Division recently awarded WIN a $6 million grant to train workers in robotics and automation. WIN is a partnership of 10 community colleges and six Michigan Works! Agencies in southeast Michigan, including HFC.

LU, Siam Technology College Collaborate on Dual Degrees
In a recent ceremony, Lamar University President Kenneth Evans and Pornphisud Mongkhonvanit, president of Bangkok, Thailand-based Siam Technology College, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to further collaboration for shared academic programs with the intention of offering dual degree programs in digital learning and leading, business and other academic subjects. The program is designed to lead to a ‘dual degree’ award that offers students the ability earn a U.S. degree from Lamar University and at the same time, earn a Thai degree from Siam Technology College. Students could also obtain industry certification from Microsoft and additional academic certifications from Lamar.

Northeast Michigan Fiber Consortium Celebrates 10th Anniversary
The Northeast Michigan Fiber Consortium celebrated its tenth anniversary in November with a special celebration at Thunder Bay Marine Sanctuary in Alpena. The consortium was formed in 2006 to connect several organizations in Alpena, including Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary/NOAA, the City of Alpena, Alpena County, Alpena County Library, Alpena Public Schools, Alpena Regional Medical Center, Northeast Michigan Community Mental Health and Northland Library Cooperative. Merit Network connected the organizations using fiber, and the consortium has grown to include many other organizations in northeast Michigan.

New Building Reflects MSU’s Commitment to STEM-Related Fields
Michigan State University’s newest building, the Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building, has been built with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in mind. The new five-story facility will include wet bench laboratories, computational research space, collaborative space and offices. The project will be completed in August 2019.

Preparations for Swan Building Annex Renovation Underway
Ferris State University will be adding 34,000 square feet of new space to the Swan Technical Arts Building Annex. The new area will house with Center for Advanced Manufacturing and the Center for Welding Excellence, as well as instructional and office space. It is expected to be completed in August 2018.
