A Non-Profit, Serving Our Community
Merit is a 501(c)(3) non-profit with a mission of strengthening its Membership through collaboration, innovation, information technology and Member service.
Supporting the Education Community for 50 Years
Formed in 1966, Merit connects organizations and helps to build strong peer relationships, enabling educational institutions to achieve far more together than they can alone.
A Catalyst for Collaboration
Merit strives to build a robust Member community. Merit Members can get involved and learn new ways of using technology through our communities of practice, technology forums, and Member conferences.
Merit operates America’s longest-running regional network and is a trusted network provider in Michigan since 1966. We provide service to 100% of the public universities in Michigan, a majority of community colleges, private colleges and universities, as well as a large number of K-12 districts, public libraries, government agencies, health care and other non-profit institutions.
The network is designed to support cloud services and Internet-based applications for organizations of any size.
The Merit backbone features over 3,800 miles of fiber-optic network infrastructure that stretches across both the Lower and Upper Peninsulas. Merit, the longest-running regional network in America, is also the best connected.
Our network has the capacity and engineering performance to support high-bandwidth applications, such as distance learning, large-scale data transfers, videoconferencing, virtual laboratories, remote instrumentation and digital libraries.
Merit was one of the first state education networks to receive designation as an Internet2 Sponsored Educational Group Participant (SEGP), now known as U.S. UCAN. Through this program, Merit serves as a conduit to Internet2’s many working groups and initiatives for Michigan institutions. Merit provides access to its eligible Member institutions via the U.S. UCAN program.
