Merit 50th Anniversary Celebration
50 Years of Innovation & Collaboration
Thank You To Everyone Who Attended Merit’s Golden Anniversary Celebration!

Merit hosted a 50th Anniversary Celebration on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at the Ann Arbor Marriott Ypsilanti at Eagle Crest. The event was held following the first day of the Merit Member Conference (MMC).

Created in 1966, Merit Network has been a leader in networking and Internet technologies for 50 years. Merit established networking in Michigan long before the term “Internet” was invented. Since Merit’s inception, our researchers and engineers have been instrumental in the successful deployment of many advanced networking and technology projects.

We celebrated five decades of technology innovation and community building!

I feel blessed to have worked for Merit during the early development of the backbone through the start of the lighting of the dark fiber project. Being part of the technical changes and advancement was truly amazing. There were so many amazing and talented people and so many memories.

Michigan Education and Research Information Triad. Bert Herzog as the first president created a very productive organization, quickly growing beyond the founding three universities. Much came from the ConComp project, including Bert and Dave Mills, who played a central role with the implementation of the Data Concentrator, which led to the Remote Data Concentrator. Then Eric Aupperle took the helm of Merit. With more than 20 years of networking experience, the Merit team under Eric was at the core of implementing NSFNET, What a history!

I am writing this on behalf of my father, Masaki Hirabaru, who had worked at MERIT during around 1998-2001. Although I only know little about his actual work and projects, us family all understand that he devoted himself to make people happy through Internet and enjoyed doing so. Life in Michigan was such a great time for us and it is regretful that we cannot join the Anniversary Celebration. Thank you for inviting us and congratulations to 50 years? We wish all the best for the next 50 years?
