Merit/NANOG Internship Program
July 18, 2008
By Brian Warkoczeski
Ann Arbor - Merit Network and the North American Network Operators' Group (NANOG) have created a new internship program that
provides students and individuals with experience in network design and support, event coordination,
administrative support, and web design.
NANOG provides a forum where individuals from the network research, operator and vendor communities can come together to identify and solve the problems that arise in operating and growing the Internet. NANOG serves as a bridge between the technical staff of leading Internet providers close to network operations, technical communities such as standards bodies, and the academic community.
Merit Network provides administrative support to NANOG, including organizing three internationally attended meetings per year. NANOG meetings are held across North America and are coordinated by Merit.
To assist with support of NANOG, Merit Network is seeking individuals from Michigan universities to serve as student interns in the following areas:
- Network Design and Support
The intern or volunteer may either be directly involved with design, installation and troubleshooting network and network monitoring equipment at the site, or he/she may perform maintenance tasks on operational equipment so that Merit personnel may be freed up to work on additional on-site issues.
- Hotel and Event Coordination
The intern or volunteer will assist the Manager and designated staff in identifying potential meeting hosts and hotel venues, both at local and international level, finalize the marketing document, start the communication and ensure follow up. This position is very interesting as it will give the intern the opportunity to meet different resource people, coordinate with many national and international event calendars, and understand the difficulties and learning how to work with a diverse set of customers.
- Program Committee Development and Support
The intern or volunteer will help support the Program Committee Staff by updating reports, contacting speakers regarding missing materials, and assist with electronic and printed copy of meeting agendas.
- Webmaster
The intern or volunteer will assist the webmaster managing the NANOG website. The website is expected to grow and will continue to be one of the most trusted web resources regarding internet operations and practices.
