May 5, 2008
By Andy Rosenzweig
As an added feature of the 2008 Merit Member Conference, Merit is pleased to announce four pre-conference workshops to be held on Wednesday, June 11 at the Michigan Information Technology Center (MITC) in Ann Arbor.
See the Pre-Conference Workshops page for complete workshop and registration details.
The workshops are designed to provide concentrated learning on specific subjects with expert facilitators, in a relaxed setting. We invite you to come to the Merit Member Conference a day early and take part in one or more of the following pre-conference workshops:
- Disaster Recovery Roundtable
9:00 a.m.-noon
Instructor: Gretchen Grey, Academic Continuity and Disaster Readiness Director, University of Michigan
This workshop will provide opportunity for open discussion among people who are responsible for developing disaster recovery plans for their organizations. Participants will discuss issues of common interest, including funding, strategic planning, technology choices, building collaboration, and achieving ongoing progress.
- Virtual Switching Technical Workshop
9:00 a.m.-noon
Instructor: David Jansen, Consulting Systems Engineer, Cisco Systems
Virtual switching is a technology that allows multiple switching functions to be performed by a single physical device, or a single switching function to be performed by multiple physical devices across a network. Virtual switching can allow greater flexibility in routing functions and services while lowering management overhead. This workshop will focus on Cisco's Virtual Switching System (VSS), a virtualization technology that allows the pooling of multiple Catalyst 6500 switches into a single virtual switch.
- Introduction to Thin Clients
1:30-4:30 p.m.
Instructor: Paul Amaranth, Security Consultant, Merit Network
This workshop will discuss how to use LTSP, a Linux-based open source thin client server project, to provide robust computing devices using either old, obsolete equipment or new, small, inexpensive, power-efficient PC terminals. The workshop will cover technical details of the differing thin client distributions, including set-up details as well as basic operation.
- Live Video Transmission Using DVTS: A Hands-on Workshop
1:30-4:30 p.m.
Instructor: Laurence (Laurie) Kirchmeier, Senior Engineer, Merit Network
DVTS (Digital Video Transport System) is a simple and inexpensive method of transmitting high-quality video and audio over the Internet. The workshop will begin with an introduction to the theory, design, development and application of DVTS and other digital video applications. Participants will then install DVTS software on their own computers, connect a DV camera, and establish an interactive broadcast with others in the workshop using a local network.
Registration for each workshop is $60.
See the Pre-Conference Workshops page for complete descriptions, instructor bios, and registration.
