Merit GateD Consortium

GateD, the "gateway routing daemon" (pronounced "gate-dee") is used by researchers, implementors, and industry as: GateD was originally developed at Cornell University. In September 1995, Cornell selected Merit to take over the Consortium, based on Merit's expertise in routing and routing protocol development. The new Consortium was an industry/academic partnership that used membership fees to augment grant and proposal funds to significantly enhance GateD's capabilities. Merit extended the benefits of membership to provide new features such astest tools to aid router software development and testing.

In 2000, the GateD Consortium led to a Merit spinoff, NextHop Technologies, Inc., which offers GateD solutions for LAN switching, routing, multicast, IPv6 and MPLS.

In May 2008, NextHop Technologies, Inc. was acquired by U4EA Technologies.
