National Connectivity - Merit Network, Inc.

National Connectivity

A high-performance network is not only technically advanced, it is also robust. For this reason, Merit's network maintains multiple, geographically-diverse network routes, as well as connections to the "commodity" Internet and numerous non-transit peers. Merit also interconnects with other regional, national and international research and education networks.

Merit's interconnection points include:
  • Chicago, Illinois

Merit maintains three Points of Presence (POPs) in Chicago. At the Equinix InterExchange, Merit maintains a 10 gigabit-per-second (Gbps) connection to AT&T for commodity Internet. In addition, Merit supports a 10 Gbps backup connection in Cleveland to Qwest. At Equinix Merit also supports non-transit peers and connections to other research and education entities. At 427 LaSalle Street, Merit has a third non-transit peering site operating at 10 gigabit (Gb).

Merit also operates a 10 Gb connection to the CiC OmniPoP in Chicago, this cross connects to the StarLight POP for access to worldwide government, research, and educational networks, including the MREN community of CIC universities, ESNet labs, Internet2 (Chicago), CANARIE (Canadian Network of the Advancement of Research, Industry and Education) CERN (Switzerland), SURFnet (Netherlands), and and many others listed here.

  • Internet2

Merit maintains three connections to Internet2's backbone. In Chicago, Merit has a 10gbs attachment at Northwestern University at 710 N. Lakeshore Dr. Merit is also attached to Internet2 at Cleveland for full redundancy, as well as through the OmniPoP as a secondary backup. Merit is the Internet2 GigaPoP in Michigan and provides connectivity to over 40 Internet2 Members and sponsored participants.
