MERIT MEMBER CONFERENCE IS FOR BRIDGING CONNECTIONS

SAINT JOHN’S RESORT

A bridge is a physical connection that allows people and places to connect more easily. It is also a metaphor for progress, resilience, and overcoming obstacles. The Merit Member Conference 2024 is about “bridging the gap”, addressing obvious (and not-so-obvious) pitfalls, opportunities to grow, and optimization of oft-neglected issues across three essential tracks—Network, Security, and Community.

Getting Past AI Anxiety
Dave Forman

Managing Director | Accenture

Read Abstract

Tectonic technological shifts make people worry. It happened with the Internet revolution. It happened with the industrial revolution. Heck, it probably happened with the advent of the wheel. Each time, it feels like, “Here’s the big one and nothing will ever be the same.”

Now it's Artificial Intelligence. Should you worry? Are the dangers founded? Will AI take my job, undermine democracy, or mistakenly lock my dog in the car on a hot summer day? How should the anxiety around this topic be addressed? What can you do to address it for yourself and for others? What should you be telling your coworkers, students, family friends?

Dave Forman has worked in technology for the past 30 years, the last 22 in Michigan, as a tech industry journalist, an educational technology executive, and the lead of The Forge, an Ann Arbor-based software development studio run by Pillar Technology. Today, as a managing director at Accenture since 2019, Dave works with various clients on technology strategy and implementations.

In this talk, we’ll pan back and look at the current state of AI, put it in perspective by comparing it to other moments of rapid technological change, and provide guidance on how to navigate the current shift to benefit your life and career.

Breakout 2 - Disinformation Crisis in the Age of Deepfakes: Societal Implications and Interventions
Hafiz Malik

Professor | University of Michigan - Dearborn

Hashim Ali

Ph.D. Candidate | University of Michigan - Dearborn

Read Abstract

Advancements in artificial intelligence, particularly the development of deepfake—a sophisticated form of manipulated media technology—and the evolution of social media platforms, are major contributors to the unprecedented surge in global disinformation. Deepfake technology has effectively weaponized information, and social media platforms further exacerbate the issue. Malicious actors are exploiting deepfakes and social media to disseminate falsehoods, amplify rumors, propagate disinformation, distort facts, and manipulate election outcomes. Recent research indicates that disinformation inflicts significant harm on society and individual well-being. It acts as a stressor, exacerbates polarization, and erodes trust in democratic institutions. A spate of disinformation campaigns during natural disasters, geopolitical conflicts, and elections in the United States and across the globe illustrates the peril it presents to democratic societies. Although efforts to detect and combat disinformation campaigns have seen some success, malevolent actors persist in leveraging emergent generative AI technologies and repurposing social platforms to spread lies and skew political discourse.

This presentation will examine the forces driving disinformation campaigns and the threats they pose to national security, democratic institutions, and society at large. We will also showcase cutting-edge deepfake detection tools, present the findings of our current research on content verification for digital media, and suggest a strategic framework to combat the disinformation crisis.
