  On a related note, if we get a little more generic socket code
(eg. when implementing tcp connections), we could support unix sockets
as well, for a df_collector on the local machine.  I don't know that
it buys you a great deal over ip on the loopback interface, but it's
more flexible (some folks might prefer it), and comes at almost no
additional cost.
