  Is that due to a learning curve (as it would be in my case), or due to
experience knowing that anything ASN.1 is "a huge timesink"?  I would
guess if someone could "whip up" the appropriate structure for using
ASN.1 fairly easily, it would actually save time, because you don't have
to worry about creating/using your own structures for everything, it's
all sitting there ready to be used.  But again, that's just speculation.

  Yeah .. maybe someone with asn.1 coding experience will step forward
at some point.  There is the question, though, of does the ATIS standard
require ASN.1, or is it just there for those who can make use of it?
I'm still not clear on that.
