Lyle:

The question of which anti virus software you use will depend on what
email software you use to a certain degree. For Exchange and Notes, I
highly recommend Trend Micro's products. They can scan based on the
virus, certain types of text in the message and it can also run stand
alone (outside of the email system). We use that combination at
Microsoft. We get hundreds of messages a day with viruses in them and
so far, this combination works great. Trend Micro will also
automatically update the signatures and the text often found in virus
emails to the server.

The two products - Scan Mail and eManager will handle the virus problems
and will scan messages for text which are associated with the problem
messages.

I have used this combination with some small businesses and friends
businesses I support with small (single server) sites. As we all are
our friend's and family's unpaid IT departments, I chose this solution
because it works. =20

This isn't the official Microsoft position, since I am not in
Microsoft's IT dept (I'm a director in our global consulting group), I
think Trend Micro has a very good product which integrates well into
Exchange or Notes.

They also have a version of their product for OpenMail.

Hope this helps.

Lyle,

We are currently using a Sco-Unix box with Pine mail on it. It is old
and outdated, but we are not happy with the options that Microsoft is
offering. We have not been able to find antivirus software for our
particular system. We are however, scanning e-mail at our firewall. It
will remove the attached files known to contain viruses (problem if it
is a valid file) and sends a message to the user that an attached file
was deleted. We are happy so far with the results.

We are considering installing E-Mail anti-virus software on our E-Mail
server. We would like to know if any one is using anti-virus software
on your E-Mail servers to scan your users E-Mail for infected messages?
This particular software would then return the infected email back to
the sender and to the postmaster, along with notification that the mail
contained a virus. If you do not have an E-Mail anti-virus on your
server, what would be the reason?
