Google Launches Public Policy Blog
By Chloe Albanesius, www.pcweek.com

The technology industry has always been quick to champion or condemn
certain legislative initiatives, and Google on Monday added its two
cents to topics like net neutrality and immigration with the launch of a
new blog (http://googlepublicpolicy.blogspot.com/) dedicated to public
policy.
Google started the public policy blog internally in April "to limber up
our blogging muscles," Andrew McLaughlin, director of public policy and
government affairs, wrote on the site.
The search engine giant has touched on policy issues on its official
Google blog in recent months, with posts about its executives testifying
on Capitol Hill or presidential candidate visits to Google's California
campus.
The technology industry has a major stake in legislative activity and
most major companies have a strong lobbying presence in Washington.
McLaughlin was Google's only public policy official in 2005, he wrote,
but the company has since ramped up its efforts on Capitol Hill to "do
public policy advocacy in a Googley way," he said.
That includes input from users. "We want our users to be part of the
effort, to know what we're saying and why, and to help us refine and
improve our policy positions and advocacy strategies," McLaughlin said.
The blog will therefore accept user comments, a function not currently
available on the official Google blog.
Future posts will likely touch on issues like net neutrality,
censorship, innovation regulation, immigration, R&D, national security,
and trade, McLaughlin wrote. "We hope this blog will serve as a resource
for policymakers around the world," he said.
