An electrical transformer at a Manhattan power plant exploded on Saturday
at a Consolidated Edison Inc. plant, causing power outages in lower Manhattan.
 Flames shot as high as 40 feet and a large plume of black smoke trailed 
from the power plant on thecity's lower east side to the southern tip of 
Manhattan. There was no immediate word of causalities orthe scope of the 
power outage.
