I think any respectful response, even it directs the person asking the
question elsewhere, is really all that's needed. I'm not sure what
the litmus test is for "rude" but I certainly know it when I see it.
With that, how about we all agree to politely sent the new member to http://www.nanog.org/listfaq.html
when it's obvious they are asking questions that could be better
answered elsewhere? And, how about we update the faq to include links
to other sites that are of help to all of us? (Think back, remember
when you had to go to list "x" to figure out what the hell was
happening on your Multicast/ATM/FDDI/TokenRing/NewMultipointPeering
network?

We're all very eloquent in our pithy attacks against the uninitiated,
but perhaps just a "check this out" is sufficient.
