rodney sang in the opening plenary. so, after minimal
discussion, merit took a very conservative position, for which
i for one thank them.
end of that phase, history is history. since, as the victors,

sigh. OK let's get to the crux of the issue.
Should there be a rule at NANOG limiting or preventing the taking of
photographs in the main meeting room?
Maybe the group here can provide input on the question: Does the
community feel there is a problem with people taking photos at NANOG
sufficient to justify a photography limit/restriction rule at this
time?
It is worth pointing out that the press person never showed up in San
Jose, probably because they couldn't get in for free. So all this fuss
surrounding the press and pictures of nanogers on the New York Times
was ultimately over nothing. There in fact have only been a couple
other press people who have attended NANOG in the past and I don't
believe a photo from the main NANOG room has *ever* been published in
the main stream press.
So we have *no empirical evidence* that the often cited "Press"
problem ever existed for NANOG. Maybe it will at some point; the main
stream press may get wildly interested in photographing us geeks
staring at our computer screen while other geeks take turns speaking
at the lectern. I kinda doubt that will happen.
So before we go down the path of looking for solutions, defining terms
for who is the press, what constitutes consent to a photo being taken
and all that junk, let's make sure that the community believes there
is a problem sufficiently large to warrant a rule.

PS - I would also suggest that if there are o(10) or fewer people that
don't want their picture taken, it may be far easier to provide
stickers with a camera in a red circle with a line through it than to
legislate a rule, and far disruptive than the ban of last NANOG.
