Area code changes for four MichNet dial-in numbers
- From: Andy Rosenzweig
- Date: Wed Feb 06 15:41:07 2002
Four MichNet dial-in numbers will change area codes because of the
introduction of a new area code in southeast Michigan. We ask your
assistance in announcing this change to your user community.
Phone numbers in the general area of Macomb County are moving from area
code 810 to the new area code 586. Since September 22, 2001, it has been
possible to dial numbers in the affected exchanges using either area code.
On March 23, use of the new 586 area code becomes mandatory. Some users may
need to change the way they dial to reach the affected numbers.
This change involves the following MichNet dial-in numbers:
OLD NEW
------------ ------------
Mount Clemens - 810-723-7800 ===> 586-723-7800
New Baltimore - 810-684-2200 ===> 586-684-2200
Romeo - - - - - 810-894-7800 ===> 586-894-7800
Warren - - - - - 810-693-7800 ===> 586-693-7800
This change affects users who may call one of these numbers from various
locations:
* Users who are within the 586 service area will likely continue
to be able to reach their local MichNet number by dialing
seven digits. The 586 service area includes the following
phone exchanges: Armada, Center Line, Mt. Clemens, New
Baltimore, New Haven, Richmond, Romeo, Roseville, Utica,
Warren, and Washington.
* Users in the 248 area code who call the Warren or Romeo
numbers (most significantly users in the Royal Oak and
Troy phone exchanges) will need to change the area
code they use to reach those numbers. Such users
have likely always needed to use the area code when
dialing these numbers, and they will need to change the
area code from 810 to 586.
* Users who are in the Algonac and Marine City exchanges
are within a local call of the New Baltimore number
(586-684-2200). They previously have likely been able
to reach that number by dialing seven digits. They will
now need to dial using 1 plus the area code.
Users in other neighboring exchanges likely do not use the numbers whose
area codes are changing.
As with all previous area code additions, this change has no affect on what
is considered a local call. A call to one of these numbers that was
previously a local call should continue to be local, regardless of the
number of digits dialed. However, users are encouraged to contact their
local phone provider if they have questions about their local service area.
More information about the area code transition is included in the North
American Numbering Plan Administration's planning letter at:
