Web caching update

  • From: Jeff Ogden
  • Date: Thu Jul 16 12:19:21 1998

The following update is from the Web Cache team at Merit.
    -Jeff

Merit has completed the second phase of the statewide web caching
infrastructure. Now in production are 5 regional cache servers, including
the mother cache server which has been available in Ann Arbor for a few
months. The last regional server planned for Houghton should be
completed by the end of July.

In the next few days, Internet Consultants at Merit will be contacting
the local cache administrators with information regarding changes
needed to use the nearest regional cache. Over the coming weeks Merit
will continue to gather data and publish information on the possible
bandwidth savings when using a web cache.

The final phase of the project includes a review of dial-in and web
caching. Further information on this phase to be announced at the next
MJTS meeting. If you would like to learn more about web caching, refer to
the "Statewide Web Caching Infrastructure" article published in the Summer
edition of the MichNet News.

Merit would again like to thank Kyle VanderBeek, Systems Engineer at
Calvin College, for his help with this project.
