Internet Caching: I am bored (and greedy)!

  • From: Kyle R VanderBeek

Just about everyone on this list knows that I'm interested in the internet
caching effort, a lot. Everyone also knows that rollout has been a little
slow up to this point, but is about to speed up.

The issue at hand is now local expertise. Many sites do not have staff
with the necessary knowledge to get a caching server up and running,
especially since the most popular/stable solution is squid and is Unix
only. I'm giving you that expertise free:

ANYONE who brings an x86 based-machine to MJTS tomorrow will get back,
mailed (I'll pay postage) or hand delivered, a RedHat Linux based squid
caching server ready to rock.

Details: Pentium class processor preferred, as is SCSI disk (though not
totally necessary to get a pilot project started). A decent starter box
would have 64meg of memory, 1gig disk for system and 2gigs for cache. If
you have time, make sure your components are Linux friendly (or ask me if
they are). Need more detail or suggestions? Call me at (616) 957-6144 or
email kvbeek@calvin.edu.

So now you ask, why do it?? Because I'm selfish. I want as much
bandwidth and speed as I can get. Every affiliate that runs through a
cache server starts saving me bits. Every time you don't redundantly
request a graphic from cnn.com, there's more room for me to run my other
apps.

So call.

Bring a machine.

Just do it.

I'd love to, but I'm teaching my ferret to yodel.
