New MichNet numbers: Lapeer & Port Huron

  • From: Scott Gerstenberger
  • Date: Thu Apr 30 19:18:43 1998

IMPORTANT NOTICES

The following two notices should be forwarded to all
MichNet users who use the current MichNet dial-in numbers
in Lapeer (810-667-7248) or Port Huron (810-364-1503).

--------------------------

Lapeer MichNet Dial-in

Merit is pleased to announce the activation of 810-538-2200
as our new Lapeer MichNet shared dial-in number. This new
number has many more lines than the old number and is based
on new high-speed digital modem techology. Over the next
month or two, the new lines will begin to support the new
v.90 high-speed modem protocol. Users who already have v.90
modems should configure them as v.34 modems until an
annoucement is made indicating that we have enabled v.90
on our new lines.

In conjunction with this change, we have a special temporary
number for users in the commmunity of Hadley (810-797-xxxx).
The number is 810-245-0204. It reaches the same modem lines
as the new main Lapeer number. This temporary number will
likely be needed for several months as a dispute between
several phone companies is worked out.

All other users in the local Lapeer calling area (Columbiaville,
Dryden, Lapeer itself, Metamora, and North Branch) should call
the new main Lapeer number, 810-538-2200.

The old Lapeer number, 810-667-7248, will remain in service
for the time being, but will be phased out after we are sure
that the new service is working properly. For this reason,
all users should switch to using the new numbers as soon as
possible.

We have created a temporary email address for end users to
report telephone dialing problems associated with the use
of these new numbers. Although we have tested the service
for some time, there may still be telephone exchanges where
calls to the new numbers do not go through properly or
consistently. The most common evidence of these kinds of
problems will be various recordings from the telephone
companies, such as "all circuits are busy" or "your call
cannot be completed as dialed". People who receive such
recordings or otherwise have trouble *dialing* the new
numbers may report problems directly to Merit by sending
email to tricitytest@merit.edu with the following details:

    1. Date and time of the problem
    2. Merit phone number being dialed
    3. Area code and complete phone number of the number
from which the call was attempted
    4. The nature of the problem (busy signal, fast busy signal,
the recorded message heard, etc.) including the wording
       of any recorded message heard.
    5. The user's name and email (optional)

The email must contain at least the first four items above.

Note that this email address should *not* be used to report
other kinds of problems such as modem connect speeds,
password failures, disconnects, etc. Those types of problems
should be reported in the normal way, i.e. through the
appropriate channels of the organization that issued the
user his/her Merit AccessID.

--------------------------

Port Huron MichNet Dial-in

Merit is pleased to announce the activation of 810-455-2200
as our new Port Huron MichNet shared dial-in number. This new
number has many more lines than the old number and is based
on new high-speed digital modem techology. Over the next
month or two, the new lines will begin to support the new
v.90 high-speed modem protocol. Users who already have v.90
modems should configure them as v.34 modems until an
annoucement is made indicating that we have enabled v.90
on our new lines.

In conjunction with this change, we have a special temporary
number for users in the commmunity of Avoca (810-324-xxxx).
The number is 810-388-0855. It reaches the same modem lines
as the new main Port Huron number. This temporary number will
likely be needed for several months as a dispute between
several phone companies is worked out.

All other users in the local Port Huron calling area (Goodells,
Jeddo, Port Huron itself, and Smiths Creek) should call the
new main Port Huron number, 810-455-2200.

The old Port Huron number, 810-364-1503, will remain in service
for the time being, but will be phased out after we are sure
that the new service is working properly. For this reason,
all users should switch to using the new numbers as soon as
possible.

We have created a temporary email address for end users to

numbers may report problems directly to Merit by sending

    1. Date and time of the problem
    2. Merit phone number being dialed
    3. Area code and complete phone number of the number
from which the call was attempted
    4. The nature of the problem (busy signal, fast busy signal,
the recorded message heard, etc.) including the wording
       of any recorded message heard.
    5. The user's name and email (optional)
