MJUS Agenda--August 12, 1997

The next MJUS meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, August 12 at the MSU
Union in E. Lansing. Merit hopes that you have this date on your
calendar and plan to attend. We have some exciting guest presenters for
this day. Pre-registration is preferred (see below.)
Guest speakers in the morning sessions include:
+ Virginia Rezmierski, noted policy expert from U-M, on developing and
implementing ethical use and computer security policies.
+ Howard Simon, Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties
Union (ACLU), on First Amendment issues, the Internet, and the
recent landmark ruling by the Supreme Court.
An extended lunch period with break-out sessions will allow us to
further explore these topics and others, including a session on the
Universal Service Fund led by Jeff Ogden.
Afternoon sessions will include reports on site activities, break-out
sessions, and Merit/MichNet network and dial-in news.

Ms. Rezmierski shares strategies for shaping and
implementing effective policy for electronic media.
11:00 AM FIRST AMENDMENT ISSUES AND THE INTERNET
--Howard Simon, Executive Director,
American Civil Liberties Union
On 26 June 1997, the Supreme Court ruled in Reno v. ACLU
that the censorship provisions of the federal
Communications Decency Act were an unconstitutional
restriction on free speech. Mr. Simon discusses the ACLU
lawsuit and why electronic data should now be treated like
print media.

Grab a lunch at one the eateries in the MSU Union and join
in one of the break-out sessions back at the Gold Room:

Your chance to share news from you site, such as your
plans for participating in the USF program, changes in
your network, staff changes, etc.
1:30 PM REPORT BACK ON BREAK-OUT SESSIONS
2:30 PM DIAL-IN UPDATE/ "FUTURES AND FEATURES"
--Scott Gerstenberger and John Vollbrecht, Merit
Scott will cover new developments in the Merit/MichNet
dial-in world. John introduces the new release of Merit's
AAA software in his talk, "Futures and Features."
3:00 PM STATE OF THE NETWORK
--Mike Mosher, Merit
Mike will provide updates on the vbns link and other
network changes and Merit activities.
