There are still seats available for the MichNet Seminar in Mount
Pleasant on Wednesday, July 16. A repost of the agenda and
registration form is below.

The MichNet Seminar is an opportunity for individuals from your
organization to receive quality training at no additional cost
to you. Your organization can send up to six individuals to each
MichNet Seminar.

While MichNet Seminars are designed for the entire MichNet
community, if your organization will be eligible for Universal
Service Fund Discounts, please note that attendance at MichNet
Seminars might be a way to help meet the training
self-certification requirement when applying for a USF grant.
Training is not discountable by the Universal Service Fund,
but MichNet Seminars are free to MichNet member and affiliate
organizations.

On behalf of Merit Network, Inc. I am pleased to announce two upcoming
MichNet Seminars. Seminars will be held on Wednesday, July 16th at
Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant and Wednesday, August 6th at
Bay de Noc Community College in Escanaba. As many of you know, MichNet
Seminars are held for the benefit of our member and affiliate
organizations four times a year. Attendance at MichNet Seminars is free,
with each member and affiliate organization entitled to send up to six
participants to each seminar.

This message will exclusively discuss the MOUNT PLEASANT SEMINAR ON JULY
16 and contains a registration form for that seminar. A separate e-mail
message will be sent which will discuss the Escanaba seminar on August
6th. This information will also be posted to the Merit Network World Wide
Web Site, http://www.merit.edu/

              MOUNT PLEASANT SEMINAR
                WEDNESDAY, JULY 16

The seminar will begin at 9:00 am with a plenary session for all
participants. Following the plenary session, we will break into two
tracks running concurrently until 3:15 pm.

Track I, is aimed at users with little or no Internet experience. This
hands-on session will provide a basic understanding of how to use the
Internet and the World Wide Web.

Track II, is intended for site administrators and advanced users who would
like additional insight into advanced Internet topics and applications.
The last session of the day will feature two concurrent break out
sessions.

A tentative agenda (with session abstracts) is below:

Plenary Session (both tracks)
  Legal Issues and the Internet:
We will discuss some of the legal issues facing
organizations providing employee access to the
Internet and conducting business on the Internet.

Track I:
  Introduction to Netscape:
A hands-on introduction to the use of the World Wide
Web. This session will concentrate on Netscape
Navigator as a World Wide Web browser.
Doing Research on the World Wide Web:
Discover available Internet search programs and
effective techniques that work to locate Internet
     resources.
  Directed Activity on the Internet
MichNet Trainers and Internet Consultants will be
available to assist you in directed activities to
help you hone your Web browsing skills.

Track II:
Making of the CREN Virtual Seminar
     Presented by Rick Witten, Synapsis
The CREN Virtual Seminar is series of interactive
CD-ROM based seminars on advanced Internet topics
featuring national known experts in the field.
The CD-ROMs will be distributed to CREN member
institutions and available for purchase by other
educational institutions. The production of the
CD-ROMS involved various software tools such as Real
Media, Adobe AfterEffects, MacroMind Director, and
JavaScript. Mr. Witten will be discussing how these
     CDs were created.
  Internet Security
How secure is your Internet server? We will examine
ways to detect security breaches at your site and some
of the ways to correct these problems.
  Breakout Session A
Integrating the Internet into a PowerPoint 97 Presentation
An explanation of how to link directly to web pages
from within a PowerPoint 97 slide presentation. We
will demonstrate how easy it is to conduct slide
presentation directly to the screen of a remote
computer over a WAN, such as the Internet.
  Breakout Session B
  CU-SeeMe Video Conferencing
CU-SeeMe facilitates low cost video conferencing
between two machines attached to the Internet. We will
demonstrate CU-SeeMe and discuss requirements necessary
     for its setup and use.

MichNet members and affiliates are invited to send up to six people. If
you would like additional staff to attend, we can place them on a waiting
list for space-available admission. Please return your completed
