Reminder: Merit's SprintNet service to end Dec. 31st
- From: Jeff Ogden
- Date: Thu Dec 12 11:47:21 1996
Just a reminder that Merit's SprintNet service will end in a few weeks --
on December 31, 1996. For more information see
http://www.merit.edu/michnet/announcements/9610.html#sprintnet.ends
For many weeks SprintNet users that connect to MichNet have been seeing a
message reminding them that the service will end, so hopefully no one will
be shocked to learn that the service has ended.
Merit's Autonet service and the for-fee 800 service will continue. These
services meet some of the same needs that the SprintNet service did.
Merit is just beginning a test of a new world-wide PPP service
called the IBM Global Network. Although we don't have a precise
date for this new service, we're expecting it to be
available by the end of the first quarter of 1997 and
to offer pricing, coverage, and speed which are superior
to the Sprintnet service which is being discontinued. The IBM
Global Network Serivce will offer both national and international
PPP dial-in. Callers will be able to use the same Access IDs they
use with the regular MichNet dial-in service, although the Access IDs
will have to be enabled to use the IBM Global Network Serivce since
there will be per minute charges that Merit will bill back to the
organization that issued the Access ID.
