NAS Authentication Failures

Is it possible for the NAS to give a more descriptive message in the event of
authentication failure? At present we only see 'invalid login', no matter
what the cause of the failure. It would be very useful to know if the login
was actually refused by the authenticator or if there simply was no answer to
the auth query. We had a faulty cable on our NAS which caused a number of
folks to think that their accounts had gone sour when in fact the NAS just
couldn't talk to anyone.
