Have you tried it?  It works fine with a . for me from about four 
different telnet packages I just tried.  (About the only thing I 
didn't try was a mac).

There is nothing wrong with putting a "." at the end of a domain 
name.  Most packages take it as "do not append any default domain 
names"...  You only have to be sure that it is used only with 
a FQDN...
