Historical
IP address for UM-MTS and MAILRUS changing
- From: Richard S. Conto
- Date: Tue Dec 21 13:33:05 1993
FYI: Please correct any procedures that use the numeric address,
or any systems that depend on /etc/hosts to have the correct address
for these machines.
Please also check your /etc/resolv.conf to see if MAILRUS is listed
as a nameserver.

= subject: IP addresses will change for mailrus, UM-MTS HIMs.
= date: Mon, 20 Dec 1993 19:27:45 -0500
= ref: <9312210027.AA10452@merit.edu>
=--------
=At noon on December 30, 1993, the following IP address changes will occur:
=
= mailrus.cc.umich.edu will move from 35.1.1.26 to 141.211.144.18
= him1.cc.umich.edu will move from 35.1.1.43 to 141.211.144.21
= him3.cc.umich.edu will move from 35.1.48.157 to 141.211.144.23
=
=All three machines will be down beginning at noon so that these changes
=can be made.
=
=The domain name for UM-MTS (um.cc.umich.edu) maps to the IP addresses for
=him1, him2, and him3, which are the machines that interface UM-MTS to the
=TCP/IP world. Since the addresses for him1 and him3 will change, the
=addresses returned by um.cc.umich.edu will change accordingly.
=
=Users and machines that properly use the DNS (domain name service) to
=access um.cc.umich.edu and mailrus.cc.umich.edu will be unaffected
=by this change.
=
=Users who use IP numbers to connect to these hosts and users whose machines
=store IP numbers instead of using the DNS will both find that their old
=numbers will not work after this change. Optimally, we'd prefer that
=users begin using domain names instead of numbers. Unfortunately, many
=software packages still do not allow domain names for many services.
=
=Many email clients require that their configurations include the IP number
=of an email server. Anyone who uses a remote email client should check
=their configurations to make sure that the IP numbers 35.1.1.26, 35.1.1.43,
=and 35.1.48.157 are not present. If possible, try to use a domain name.
=If that doesn't work, switch to the corresponding number as listed at the
=top of this message. Note that if you are a Netware administrator, the
=package that exchanges email with the outside world will probably need
=reconfiguration.
=
=An unknown number of machines -- Unix, DOS, and Mac -- have software
=configured to use 35.1.1.26 as a default nameserver. Mailrus is a
=poor choice for this. If you have a departmental nameserver, use that.
=Otherwise, try using dns.itd.umich.edu instead.
=
=Finally, some systems receive outbound LPD connections from UM-MTS
=so that MTS users can print to local laser printers, usually via
=a unix box. Typically, an LPD server checks IP addresses to confirm
=that the other system is permitted to use the local printer. Systems
=which currently do so for UM-MTS will have to change those addresses.
=
=Apologies for the relatively short notice on these changes. They
=were scheduled now based on other decisions which were made quite
=recently. Again, users and machines that properly use the DNS
=will be unaffected by this change. (ITD does not support connections
=which don't use the DNS. :-) )
=
=ITD Consultants (including 4-Help) are being informed via their conference.
=If you think that someone else is missing from the recipient list who
=should know, please forward this (and let me know too).
=
=I'll try to have an MTS signon message installed soon.
=
=Thanks,
=--eric
