Merit's Boston dial-in access to end Nov 15th

  • From: Jeff.Ogden
  • Date: Sun Oct 24 10:24:35 1993

There is a message in the Boston SCP telling dial-in users
to look in the announcements menu of the help server. If they
do they will see the following:

Merit's Boston dial-in number will be removed Nov. 15th.

Merit's Boston dial-in is really a side effect of the
University of Michigan's access to Medline. That access with
be changing over to an Internet connection and the remaining
dial-in use from Boston does not justify continuing this
   service from the Boston area.

An alternative is to use the Autonet or SpritNet dial-in
   services from the Boston area.

If you have questions, contact your local consulting support.

How to Connect Your Terminal to SprintNet and Then to Merit

      1. Dial your local SprintNet access number.

      2. If you have dialed in to SprintNet at 1200 bps or less,
          press carriage return twice.

If you have dialed in to SprintNet at 2400 bps, type @ and
press carriage return. The @ will not echo.

If you are dialing in at 9600 bps with seven data bits and no
parity, type @ and press carriage return. The @ won't echo.

If you are dialing in at 9600 bps with eight data bits, no
parity, type @D and press carriage return. Those characters
          will not echo.

      3. The network will respond:
                             TELENET
                             nnn nnn
                             TERMINAL=
                             @

In response to the "TERMINAL=" prompt you should type the
two-character identifier (see below) for the terminal you are using,
followed by a carriage return. In response to the "@"
prompt, you should type "C 31362" or C 313202" (without the
quotes) to connect to the Merit Network. Specifying the
31362 address will route your connection through a Merit
node located in Ann Arbor. Specifying 313202 will route it
          through a node in Detroit.

Two-Character Identifiers: The primary parameters established
when an identifier is selected are the carriage width and
carriage return delay (CRD). The following identifiers are
sufficient for the majority of terminals.

           identifier: D1 width: 80 CRD: 0 character-times
           identifier: A2 width: 80 CRD: 7 character-times
           identifier: B3 width: 132 CRD: 0 character-times
           identifier: B4 width: 132 CRD: 10 character-times
           identifier: D2 width: 72 CRD: 0 character-times

      4. SprintNet will print out a connection message (or will inform
you of any error condition) and the Merit Network will ask
"Which Host?". Type the identifier for the host you want to
use. If the host you ask for is available, Merit will connect
you and you may use the host as though you had dialed directly.

      5. After you sign off from the host, Merit will close the
connection and return you directly to SprintNet. To leave
leave that network, simply hang up the phone.

Users who encounter problems while using SprintNet to access
Merit may contact the Merit central office or, if the problems
      are specific to SprintNet:

SprintNet: Contact SprintNet Customer Service which is staffed at
all hours. For SprintNet users located in the 48 contiguous states
of the U.S., the toll-free number is (800)877-5045. All users
outside the contiguous 48 states of the U.S. should call
      (703)689-6400.

                               Command:

In response, you should type "T xx;C Merit" where "xx" is
