Ann Arbor dialup phone number changes
- From: Richard Schmalgemeier
- Date: Fri Oct 22 07:12:41 1993
The dialup phone numbers in Ann Arbor are changing over the
next few weeks. The attached announcement has been put into
the MichNet help server (HELP at the "Which Host?" prompt)
and users will see a message about this when they connect to
the Ann Arbor dialup numbers. [There has been a more vaguely
worded message and announcement (re: the actual date of the
change) in for about the last two weeks].

----------------------
Beginning on November 1, the Ann Arbor dial-in phone numbers will
change for 19,200 bps, 9600 bps, and 2400 bps modems, according
to the following schedule:
November 1: The new 9600 bps and 19,200 bps phone numbers become
available.
November 15: The old 9600 bps and 19,200 bps phone numbers are
taken out of service. The new 2400 bps phone number becomes
available.
November 29: The old 2400 bps phone number is taken out of
service.
As you can see, for each speed, there will be a two week period when both
the old and new phone numbers will work. However, it will be to your
advantage to switch to the new phone number as soon as possible after the
new phone number becomes available.
The new telephone numbers are:
Speed New Phone Number Old Phone Number
1200 bps (Vadic) Unchanged 763-6521
1200 bps (Bell 212A) Unchanged 763-6520
2400 bps 998-1302 764-4800
9600 bps (V.32, V.42) 998-1303 747-3400
19,200 bps (V.32, V.42bis) 998-1304 763-6800
Please note that because the new phone numbers are NOT on U-M phone
lines, calls made from U-M campus phones will need to dial a 9 and then
the full seven digits. Calls to off-campus numbers from campus phones,
except those made from student residences, are charged at the rate of 11
cents per call. We estimate that only about 10% of calls made to dial-in
modems are made from campus faculty and staff offices. It is only
calls from these offices that will have this additional charge.
The phone number changes will increase efficiency by reducing the number
of telephone switches your call will pass through. This, together with
the addition of 100 new modems, will result in fewer busy signals and
faster connections on the Ann Arbor dial-in lines.
If you use a login script or connection script to dial in to the Ann Arbor
phone numbers at 2400 bps, 9600 bps, or 19,200 bps, you will need to
change your script when the phone number changes. Also, if you have
prepared a script for someone else, please help them make the necessary
change so that the transition will go smoothly for them too.
