MichNet Backbone Upgrade

Yesterday the T1 circuit between the MichNet backbone router in
Kalamazoo and the backbone router in Grand Rapids was placed in
service. Some time ago a 56K circuit between SVSU/CIESIN and
CMU was put in service. With this work finished we now have two
circuits into each MichNet backbone node and the majority of
the backbone upgrade is complete.
Next steps: T1 for Michigan Tech. A router for Traverse City.
Possibly another T1 circuit for Flint or Saginaw.
It has been a busy year. The backbone upgrade, the attachments
of 23 new affiliates and upgrades for several more and the
progress on the Network Access Server (NAS, aka SCP
replacement) has kept everyone hard at work. We've even
made progress in defining some possible approaches to video. It
will be fun to look back a year from now and see what the
network looks like.
