A protocol analyzer

We at Calvin College are looking for a protocol analyzer.
1> What are people using? (sniffer,Lan Vista, Network general)
2> Is ther public domain stuff that does the job?
I need the thing to break down packets and analyze the contents based on
filters. It has to do at least tcp/ip, IPX and Ethertalk.
