cisco software maintenance
- From: Jeff.Ogden
- Date: Mon Aug 05 11:54:47 1991
As you'll see from the attached messages Fred Rowe is trying to get
a handle on how many cisco routers Merit and the Merit members
might like to include under a joint software maintenance contract.
We don't need formal comittments form people at this time, Fred is
just trying to get a better idea of which option he should be working
toward.
The software maintenance gives you a customer assistance number to call
and a reduced price on ROM upgrades. There is no cost to the individual
schools to participate in the joint contract other than keeping Merit
informed about the number, type and serial numbers of the cisco routers
on your campus.
So if your school would be interested in participating in this sort of
arrangement, please send me a reply giving the number of routers that
you might like to include.

Jeff any chance I can ask you to check with all the Merit Members
to get an idea how many routers they might want to put under the
software agreement?

This agreement will be the same as the CICnet agreement. Basicaly they
will get 24/7 phone consulting from cisco for software trouble shooting,
Holidays not included.
They would also get the option to purchase software update proms
for $ 200 per box, or purchase a site lisense at $ 1000 per type of
box and burn their own prom. The break even point being 5 machines
of the same type.
They would have to give us the serial number of each box which we
would forward to cisco. cisco wants only 1 site to be responsible
for serial numbers. The users when calling cisco would then reference
the contract number.
No hardware is covered under this agreement, and each site would
arrange whatever hardware coverage best suited their needs.
I mostly need a rough count at this time to determine which contract
to set up, 21 to 40 machines will cost $ 5,600, 41 and over is
$ 11,000 per year. If Merit gets the NSF grant I expect to be over
the 21 but under the 41 and knowing how many our members will add
will determine if I just go ahead and set up for the max right off.
