  Ronald,
    This sounds like a permissions problem.  The ack.log/trans.log
files are written by the irr_rpsl_submit process (rather than irrd)
which gets invoked by sendmail.  It's debatable about whether or
not these files really belong in the database directory.  You
can usually fix this by making irr_rpsl_submit to be set-uid to
some id and then making sure that id has write access to the
database directory.
