A few seats remain for a two-day course on the fundamentals of Voice
over IP (VoIP), to be held on Thursday and Friday, September 10-11 at
Merit's offices in Ann Arbor. Registration and complete details are
available at:

  http://www.merit.edu/learning/voipfundamentals

An understanding of VoIP is vital for organizations that use voice
applications through the Internet--or plan to transition to VoIP in the
future. This course will provide a solid grounding in VoIP
infrastructure, troubleshooting tools, and the long-term management of
enterprise IP telephony deployments. The class will also provide a
neutral comparison of the feature sets available in the top four VoIP
solutions: Cisco, Avaya, Microsoft, and Asterisk.

Registration for attendees from Merit Member organizations is $749.
Attendees from non-profit organizations that are not Merit Members may
attend for $799. Others can register for $849. Registration includes all
training materials, continental breakfast, beverages and snacks.

Class goals and contents
------------------------
"Introduction to VoIP Technology" will be of great value to network
engineers, particularly those that need to manage voice communication
solutions over the Internet for their organizations. It will give
students hands-on instruction in a small classroom setting to ensure
that all attendees understand the essential elements of this important
technology. The course provides a solid introduction for those who wish
to learn about VoIP technology quickly and effectively through hands-on
training.

The agenda will include the following key activities:

* Describe VoIP, voice gateways, special requirements for VoIP calls,
codecs and codec complexity, and how digital signal processors are used
as media resources on a voice gateway

* Configure gateway interconnections to support VoIP and PSTN calls, and
to integrate with the PSTN and a private branch exchange (PBX)

* Design and architecture considerations

* Compare Cisco, Avaya, Microsoft, and Asterisk VoIP/IP Telephony solutions

Prerequisites
-------------
Students should have a working knowledge of fundamental terms and
concepts of computer networking, including LANs, WANs, and IP switching
and routing. Basic knowledge of traditional telephone technologies is
helpful but not required; the class will include a primer on the
fundamentals of the public switched telephone network.

About the instructor
--------------------
"Introduction to VoIP Technology" is offered in partnership with
Computer Data, Inc., a national provider of technical training and a
Cisco Learning Partner. The class is taught by Harold Greene, CCSI,
CCVP, who has extensive telecommunications and internetworking experience.

Location, times and registration
--------------------------------
"Introduction to VoIP Technology: VoIP Fundamentals and a Comparison of
IP Telephony Solutions" will be held at the Michigan Information
Technology Center, 1000 Oakbrook Drive, Ann Arbor, Michigan, on Thursday
and Friday, September 10-11, 2009. The agenda each day will begin with
continental breakfast at 8:30, with the agenda beginning at 9:00 and
concluding by 5:00 p.m.

Registration for individuals from Merit Member organizations is $749 per
attendee. Attendees from non-profit organizations that are not Merit
Members may attend for $799. Others may register for $849. Registration
