- From: Merit Network Professional Learning
- Date: Tue Jul 21 08:42:39 2009
Merit Network is pleased to host a two-day course on the fundamentals of
Voice over IP (VoIP). The workshop will be held on Thursday and Friday,

VoIP describes the set of technologies used to transmit voice
communications over IP networks. An understanding of VoIP is vital for
organizations that want to use voice-messaging applications through the
Internet. This course will provide an overview of Voice over IP
infrastructure and discuss troubleshooting tools and the long-term
management of enterprise IP telephony deployments. The class will also
provide a neutral comparison of the feature sets available in the top
four VoIP/IP telephony solutions: Cisco, Avaya, Microsoft, and Asterisk.
Registration for attendees from Merit Member organizations is $749.
Attendees from non-profit organizations that are not Merit Members may
attend for $799. Others can register for $849. Registration includes all
training materials, continental breakfast, beverages and snacks.
Class Goals and contents
------------------------
"Introduction to VoIP Technology" will be of great value to network
engineers, particularly those that need to manage voice communication
solutions over the Internet for their organizations. It will give
students hands-on instruction in a small classroom setting to ensure
that all attendees understand the essential elements of this important
technology. The course provides a solid introduction for those who wish
to learn about VoIP technology quickly and effectively through hands-on
training.
The agenda will include the following key activities:
* Describe VoIP, voice gateways, special requirements for VoIP calls,
codecs and codec complexity, and how digital signal processors are used
as media resources on a voice gateway
* Configure gateway interconnections to support VoIP and PSTN calls, and
to integrate with the PSTN and a private branch exchange (PBX)
* Design and architecture considerations
* Compare Cisco, Avaya, Microsoft, and Asterisk VoIP/IP Telephony solutions
Prerequisites
-------------
Students should have a working knowledge of fundamental terms and
concepts of computer networking, including LANs, WANs, and IP switching
and routing. Also, knowledge of traditional public switched telephone
network (PSTN) operations and technologies is required.
