Announcing MJTS meeting, April 7

  • From: Merit Network Professional Learning
  • Date: Wed Mar 11 09:13:27 2009

Merit Network is pleased to invite you to the spring MJTS meeting, to be
held on Tuesday, April 7 at the MSU Union in East Lansing. All Merit
Member organizations are welcome and encouraged to attend for a free day
of information and interaction. Registration is available now at:

http://www.merit.edu/events/mjts/

The April 7 agenda will include the following and more:

* MaryBeth Stuenkel from the University of Michigan will discuss the Climate Savers Computing Initiative @ the University of Michigan, a program whose goal is to make green computing practices the norm on the U-M campus and to influence other universities and the IT industry. Several projects are currently in progress, under the direction of volunteer teams. MaryBeth will share early program successes and challenges, and will suggest ideas that can be used by other organizations. More information at:
http://www.climatesavers.umich.edu/

* Jim Green from Michigan State University will discuss identity
management and middleware work at MSU. The university is participating
in the InCommon Federation, a national project to create and support
shared access to on-line resources for education and research. Jim will
discuss the campus infrastructure that enables progress in this area,
current work with the Shibboleth software package, and capabilities that
will be made possible by widespread identity federation. More at:
http://www.incommonfederation.org/
http://shibboleth.internet2.edu/

* Russell Dwarshuis from Merit will discuss the historic traffic surge
on Inauguration Day, January 20, when Internet traffic levels nationwide
were reported to be extremely heavy. Russell will discuss the traffic
spike observed on Merit's network, the impact on network performance,
the effects of similar events, and the tools used to analyze the traffic.

* Dr. Charles Antonelli from the University of Michigan will discuss the
problem of data security on mobile devices, beginning with an
enlightening look at tools that can be used to discover private data
such as social security numbers and credit card numbers stored on
portable computers and flash drives. He will then discuss encryption
technologies as a solution to the problem, including flash-drive and
whole-disk encryption for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux systems, and
network data encryption strategies. Most of the technologies to be
discussed are free or come pre-installed with operating system
distributions.

* Pete Miller, network operations directory at Merit, will discuss
Merit's recent adoption of MRequest, a request management service
provided by Information Technology Central Services at the University of
Michigan. Based on FootPrints, a Web-based request tracking system from
Numara Software, MRequest will enhance tracking of internal and external
requests for services; assist prioritization of work; and generate
metrics to aid decision-making.

The agenda will also include an update from Merit on the backbone
network and operational projects. Registration is available at:

http://www.merit.edu/events/mjts/

As always, MJTS is open only to Merit Member organizations. We encourage
you to invite others from your organization to the meeting, in this case
particularly those who have interests in campus computing, identity
management, and network instrumentation and management. Registration is
free, and we ask that you register in advance.

This meeting will be webcast live. On the day of the event there will be
a link to the broadcast on the page linked above.
