Announcing Hands-On Network Security: Practical Tools and Methods

  • From: Merit Network Professional Learning
  • Date: Mon Mar 09 10:51:55 2009

On May 7-8, Merit Network will host a second presentation of Hands-On
Network Security: Practical Tools and Methods, a two-day course designed
to help organizations maximize the security of their networks. Complete
information and registration are available at:

   http://www.merit.edu/learning/securitytools

The course is designed as an intensive, hands-on learning experience in
how to assess and secure network infrastructures using contemporary
open-source tools and techniques. The focus will be on studying current
attack methodologies, examining networks for vulnerabilities, presenting
recommended solutions and best practices for mitigation, and assessing
the effectiveness of the tools and methods used.

Hands-On Network Security is based on ITS101, Theory and Practice of
Campus Computer Security, a course offered to computer administrators at
the University of Michigan for the past three years. Over 100
administrators were trained in security essentials during this period,
providing a core set of security competencies across campus units.
Instructor Charles Antonelli developed and coordinated the teaching of
ITS101 and is pleased to present its key network security contents to
benefit other organizations. The course was first presented last November.

The course can serve either as a basic primer for novices or as a
refresher course for experienced administrators. Students should have
a working knowledge of TCP/IP and internetworking fundamentals, and
should have authorization to run network-testing tools within their own
network environments. Key topics to be covered include:

    * Reconnaissance tools
    * Network protocol attacks
    * Password cracking
    * Viruses, worms & payloads
    * Denial of service attacks
    * Firewalls & VPNs
    * Intrusion detection systems
    * Network scanning
