- From: Merit Network Professional Learning
- Date: Mon Sep 29 15:05:03 2008
Merit Network is pleased to remind you of two technical training
opportunities coming up in November, in multicast routing technologies
and network security fundamentals. These hands-on workshops have been
designed to provide usable, relevant skills for networking and
computing professionals. Registration for both workshops is open today;
below are brief descriptions and links to more information.
-------------
Internet2 IPv4 Multicast Workshop
November 5-7 (2-1/2 days), Ann Arbor
Internet2's multicast workshop offers a hands-on opportunity for
technical staff to learn current multicast routing techniques and
strategies. Students will design and configure a set of interconnected
multicast networks through a series of hands-on exercises. Taught by
professionals within the Internet2 community, the workshop is designed
to provide practical skills that can be put into practice immediately.
Registration for the two-and-a-half-day workshop is only $550. For more

Hands-On Network Security: Practical Tools and Methods
November 10-11 (2 days), Ann Arbor
This course is based on ITS101, Theory and Practice of Campus Computer
Security, a course offered to computer administrators at the University
of Michigan for the past three years. Over 100 administrators were
trained in security essentials during this period, providing a core set
of security competencies across campus units.
The two-day course is designed as an intensive, hands-on learning
experience in how to assess and secure your network infrastructure
using current open-source tools and techniques. The focus will be on
studying current attack methodologies, examining your network for
vulnerabilities, presenting recommended solutions and best practices
for mitigation, and assessing the effectiveness of the tools and
methods used. The course can serve either as a basic primer for novices
or as a refresher course for experienced administrators.
Registration for individuals from Merit Member organizations is $795
per attendee. Attendees from non-profit organizations that are not
Merit Members may attend for $895. Others may register for $1100. For
