Announcing MJTS meeting, October 7
- From: Merit Network Professional Learning
- Date: Tue Sep 16 09:53:59 2008
Merit Network is pleased to announce the agenda for the fall MJTS
meeting, to be held on Tuesday, October 7 at the MSU Union in East
Lansing. All Merit Member organizations are welcome and encouraged to
attend MJTS meetings for a free day of information and interaction.
Full information and registration are available at:
http://www.merit.edu/events/mjts/
The following presentations are of particular interest:
* Mary Roy from Cental Michigan University will discuss CMU's recent
legal complaint against the RIAA and its investigative partner,
MediaSentry. In response to inquiries by RIAA and MediaSentry, CMU
questioned MediaSentry's authority to perform investigations against
Michigan residents without a license. Mary will discuss this action in
light of the RIAA's ongoing efforts to identify illegal file sharers
and involve higher education institutions in the process.
* Also on the P2P front, staff from the University of Michigan will
discuss BAYU (Be Aware You're Uploading), an automated system that
notifies users on selected University networks when their computers
appear to be uploading files using peer-to-peer file sharing networks.
Educational in intent, the service seeks to help users avoid unintended
uploading, share files lawfully when intended, and remain mindful of
the associated risks. We will discuss both the policy issues and the
technical implementation of the service.
* Lih-Er Wey from Michigan State University will discuss recent
wireless LAN advances at MSU.
* Larry Blunk from Merit will share information about the recently
discovered cache poisoning vulnerability in the Domain Name Service.
Larry will describe the vulnerability, the potential dangers, the
industry response, and corrective steps that should be taken. He will
also talk about general best practices in DNS management as well as
DNSSEC--ultimately the only way to truly prevent cache poisoning.
* Manish Karir from Merit will give an update on several
Merit-sponsored research projects.
The agenda will also include an update from Merit on backbone
networking and organizational advances. Registration is available at:
http://www.merit.edu/events/mjts/
As always, MJTS is open only to Merit Member organizations. We
encourage you to invite others from your organization to the meeting,
in this case particularly those who have interests in P2P issues,
wireless LAN, and DNS. Registration is free, and we ask that you
register in advance.
This meeting will be webcast in RealMedia format. On the day of the
event there will be a link to the broadcast on the page linked above.
