Merit/NANOG Internship Program

Intern and/or volunteer positions in the following fields are available. A certificate will be awarded at the end of the volunteer period. Interns or volunteers will work with existing Merit staff; have direct access to national and international network operators, and ability to travel three times per year in North America.

The North American Network Operators' Group (NANOG) provides a forum where individuals from the network research, operator and vendor communities can come together to identify and solve the problems that arise in operating and growing the Internet. NANOG serves as a bridge between the technical staff of leading Internet providers close to network operations, technical communities such as standards bodies, and the academic community.

Merit Network provides administrative support to NANOG, including organizing three internationally attended meetings per year. The meetings are held across North America and are coordinated by Merit.

In support of NANOG, Merit seeks to recruit professionals looking for development as student internships from Michigan universities who are interested in the following areas of expertise:

Network Design and Support

The intern or volunteer may either be directly involved with design, installation and troubleshooting network and network monitoring equipment at the site, or he/she may perform maintenance tasks on operational equipment so that Merit personnel may be freed up to work on additional on-site issues. The candidate will be required to:
  • Assist with design and support installation, testing, and accreditation tasks for multiple internal network, and a network monitoring system
  • Become familiar with supported systems and networks during the ramp-up phase in order to assist the team in either setting up equipment at the site, or back-filling current personnel to perform maintenance as required on operational equipment

The candidate should have demonstrated hands-on experience in the following:
  • Working with Cisco routers and switches, firewalls, network security features
  • The use of a variety of hand-operated tools and electronic diagnostic equipment
  • Writing, editing, and formatting documents and basic spreadsheets
Education:
Senior level students seeking bachelors or master's degree in computer science/electrical engineering/computer engineering.

Hotel and Event Coordination

The intern or volunteer will assist the Manager and designated staff in identifying potential meeting hosts and hotel venues, both at local and international level, finalize the marketing document, start the communication and ensure follow up. This position is very interesting as it will give the intern the opportunity to meet different resource people, coordinate with many national and international event calendars, and understand the difficulties and learning how to work with a diverse set of customers.

The candidate will be provided an opportunity to:
  • Further develop strong communications skills.
  • Experience classroom or previous hotel event planning and contract awareness at a national level.
Education:
Senior level students seeking bachelors or masters degree in hospitality hotel management and/or marketing.

Program Committee Development and Support

The intern or volunteer will help support the Program Committee Staff by updating reports, contacting speakers regarding missing materials, and assist with electronic and printed copy of meeting agendas.

The candidate will be provided an opportunity to:
  • Further develop strong communications skills
  • Experience in event planning and event communications
Education:
Senior level students seeking bachelors or masters degree in marketing/communications or English

Webmaster

The intern or volunteer will assist the webmaster managing the NANOG website. The website is expected to grow and will continue to be one of the most trusted web resources regarding internet operations and practices.

The candidate will be required to:
  • Be a dynamic, patient and hardworking person who is easy going and mild mannered
  • Experienced with DreamWeaver, FrontPage or other web construction tools
  • Interested in development of technical website
Education:
Senior level students seeking bachelors or masters degree in marketing/communications or graphic design

A minimum of three months commitment is necessary for the positions listed above.

The per week and month time commitment will vary, 1 hour up to a maximum of 10 hours per week. In addition, Merit will provide all travel costs to the meeting which is approximately 40 hours in length.

It is expected that each intern or volunteer will serve on two consecutive meetings. The number of interns and volunteers per each meeting may vary, with a minimum of two expected.

Longer stays if interested and available, may be accommodated.
