Security and Savings
Merit's Virtual Private Network (VPN) combines the security of a private network with the cost savings of a shared network.
VPN service allows geographically remote locations to securely share data as if they are linked by a private Wide Area
Network (WAN), without the expense of a high-mileage point-to-point circuit or long-range fiber.
- Absolute data security
Specialized configurations create 'tunnels' utilizing Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) across Merit's
Network. Each tunnel is devoted to a single customer and isolates data from public traffic. With IPSec, each data
packet is individually encapsulated and can only be decoded by the destination router. IPSec also provides authentication
and authorization verification. In addition, each data packet is protected with Triple Data Encryption Standard (3DES)
encryption, keeping data coded and private at all times.
- Cost savings
Merit's VPN Service provides the benefits of a private WAN without the up-front capital expense or associated
maintenance and staffing issues. Existing attachments to Merit's network are easily upgraded to include VPN, and
can share a connection with 'non-tunneled' general Internet traffic, allowing the cost savings of a single IP connection.
- Merit Reliability
Merit provides all network monitoring, including a 24 x 7 Network Operations Center (NOC) and management
of routers attached to Merit's network. Merit's network is engineered to securely transport critical
applications without the congestion common on other shared networks.
