  • Learn the Essentials of VMware vSphere

    Merit Professional Learning is pleased to host a third class of VMware vSphere: Install, Configure, Manage [V5.0] in Ann Arbor on November 7-11, 2011.

    Note: The classes to be held on October 3-7 and October 10-14 are full and registration for them is closed.

    In this hands-on, VMware-instructed course, you will learn to install, configure and manage VMware vSphere, which consists of VMware ESXi and VMware vCenter Server. Approximately 40% of instruction time is spent completing hands-on labs. Completion of this course satisfies the prerequisite for taking the VMware Certified Professional 5 exam (voucher not included). It also prepares you to enroll in any of several advanced vSphere 5.0 courses.

    Course Objectives

    • Install and configure ESXi
    • Install and configure vCenter Server components
    • Configure and manage ESXi networking and storage using vCenter Server
    • Deploy, manage, and migrate virtual machines
    • Manage user access to the VMware infrastructure
    • Use vCenter Server to monitor resource usage
    • Use vCenter Server to increase scalability
    • Use VMware vCenter Update Manager to apply ESXi patches
    • Use vCenter Server to manage higher availability and data protection

    Prerequisites

    System administration experience on Microsoft Windows or Linux operating systems.

    • Virtualization, virtual machines, and vSphere components
    • Server, network, and storage virtualization concepts
    • Where vSphere fits into the cloud architecture
    • Install and use vSphere user interfaces

    Virtual Machines
    • Virtual machines, virtual machine hardware, and virtual machine files
    • Deploy a single virtual machine and virtual machine appliance

    VMware vCenter Server
    • vCenter Server and database requirements
    • vCenter Server architecture
    • Deploy a vCenter Server appliance
    • View and create vCenter Server inventory objects

    Configure and Manage Virtual Networks
    • Create and manage a standard virtual switch
    • Modify standard virtual switch properties

    Configure and Manage vSphere Storage
    • Configure ESXi with iSCSI, NFS, and Fibre Channel storage
    • Create and manage vSphere datastores
    • Configure, deploy, and manage the VMware Virtual Storage Appliance

    Virtual Machine Management
    • Deploy virtual machines using templates, cloning, and VMware vCenter Converter
    • Modify and manage virtual machines
    • Create and manage virtual machine snapshots
    • Perform VMware vMotion and Storage vMotion migrations

    Access and Authentication Control
    • Control user access through roles and permissions
    • Configure and manage the ESXi firewall

    • Control virtual machine access to CPU, memory, and I/O resources
    • VMkernel methods for optimizing CPU and memory usage

    • Strategies for backing up ESXi hosts
    • Backup/recovery APIs
    • Strategies for backing up virtual machines

    High Availability and Fault Tolerance
    • Configure and manage a VMware High Availability (HA) cluster
    • Configure fault-tolerant virtual machines using VMware Fault Tolerance

    Scalability
    • Configure and manage a VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) cluster
    • Configure Enhanced vMotion Compatibility
    • Using VMware HA and DRS together

    Patch Management
    • Manage ESXi patching and patch compliance using vCenter Update Manager

    Installing VMware vSphere 5 Components
    • ESXi Installable installation
    • vCenter Server installation
    • Additional vCenter Server module installation

    Registration Details

    The class meets daily from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. on November 7-11, 2011. The location is Merit's offices at 1000 Oakbrook Drive, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48104. The cost for the class is $3,095 for Merit Members; $3,195 for non-profit organizations that are not Merit Members; and $3,395 for other non-Members. Continental breakfast, beverages, and afternoon snack are provided each day. Registration may be canceled up to 5:00 p.m. EDT on Friday, October 7 minus a processing fee of $35. Refunds are not available after October 7; substitutions are allowed if necessary.

    You can use VMware PSO Credits to pay for part or all of your registration fee for this class. To pay by this method, please send email to learning@merit.edu making that request before you register. We will respond with instructions.

    Scholarships available

    Scholarships are available for these classes through the Professional Learning scholarship program. Anyone from a Merit Member organization may apply for a scholarship, if funding to attend is not otherwise available through the organization. Scholarship applications must be received by October 10, 2011. We are grateful to the Merit Community Supporters for their contribution to the scholarship program.
