Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Knowledge You Can Use

Join us in Ann Arbor
September 10-11, 2009

Note:

"Introduction to VoIP Technology" is a technical workshop that provides an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of VoIP in a small classroom setting from an accredited instructor. This workshop relies on hands-on training and exercises to teach the configuration, design, and architecture of VoIP solutions.

This workshop is a natural progression from "Voice over IP: The State of the Art and a Look to the Future," a one-day seminar hosted by Merit in April, 2008. That event gave attendees a broad overview of the VoIP industry in a seminar style, with a panel of experts addressing the financial and administrative trade-offs organizations face when considering a transition to VoIP. This workshop will move from the administrative to the technical, providing a strong practical grounding for technologists charged with implementing VoIP solutions.

VoIP describes the set of technologies used to transmit voice communications over IP networks. An understanding of VoIP is vital for organizations that want to use voice-messaging applications through the Internet. This course will provide an overview of Voice over IP infrastructure and discuss troubleshooting tools and the long-term management of enterprise IP telephony deployments. The class will also provide a neutral comparison of the feature sets available in the top four VoIP/IP telephony solutions: Cisco, Avaya, Microsoft, and Asterisk.

This course will be of great value to network engineers, particularly those that need to manage voice communication solutions over the Internet for their organizations. It will give students hands-on instruction in a small classroom setting to ensure that all attendees understand the essential elements of this important technology. The course provides a solid introduction for those who wish to learn about VoIP technology quickly and effectively through hands-on training.

Course Outline

  • Describe VoIP, voice gateways, special requirements for VoIP calls, codecs and codec complexity, and how digital signal processors are used as media resources on a voice gateway

  • Configure gateway interconnections to support VoIP and PSTN calls, and to integrate with the PSTN and a private branch exchange (PBX)

  • Design and architecture considerations

  • Compare Cisco, Avaya, Microsoft, and Asterisk VoIP/IP Telephony solutions

Prerequisites

Students should have a working knowledge of fundamental terms and concepts of computer networking, including LANs, WANs, and IP switching and routing. Basic knowledge of traditional telephone technologies is helpful but not required; the class will include a primer on the fundamentals of the public switched telephone network.

Instructor Information

"Introduction to VoIP Technology" is offered in partnership with Computer Data, Inc., a national provider of technical training and a Cisco Learning Partner. The class is taught by Harold Greene, CCSI, CCVP, who has extensive telecommunications and internetworking experience. Don't miss this great opportunity to gain vital knowledge about VoIP technology.
